Online Application Form

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics offers a challenging, research-intensive graduate program leading to a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Genetics.  The program, which prepares students for careers in academia or industry, emphasizes eukaryotic molecular and cellular biology with distinct applications to genetics and molecular medicine.  Doctoral candidates receive intensive laboratory training, working closely with faculty on projects at the forefront of biomedical research.

Ph.D. students spend the first year taking the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences core curriculum and completing laboratory rotations to sample the research environment in laboratories of potential interest to them.  The core curriculum provides students with a solid foundation in the areas of molecular and cellular biology and genetics.  By the end of the first year, students begin thesis research, and during the second year, they complete additional course work that is tailored to their background and area of research.  Students also participate in weekly research presentations and attend the Center's seminar series that covers the breadth of research areas in current molecular biology, molecular medicine and genetics.

Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics is dedicated to making discoveries that lead to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human disease.  From state-of-the-art research laboratories to internationally recognized patient clinics to the outstanding training environment for medical, graduate and postdoctoral students, the Center's innovative, interdisciplinary program uniquely brings together - and bridges - molecular medicine and genetics research and patient care activities throughout the Wayne State University School of Medicine and Detroit Medical Center campus.

Formed in 1986 through funding from the State of Michigan's Research Excellence Fund, the Center expanded in 1994 to include the Wayne State University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics.  Today, the Center has established a close liaison with the basic science departments at the University's main campus and School of Medicine as well as the Detroit Medical Center.

In The Heart of Wayne State University and Detroit

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics is part of the exciting growth and development at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center.  With more than 34,000 students and more than 50 doctoral programs in the arts, sciences, engineering, business and law, Wayne State University is one of the largest urban universities in the United States.  The Wayne State University School of Medicine is the largest single-campus medical school in the country.  The Detroit Medical Center, the academic health center of Wayne State University, is recognized as one of the nation's premier medical centers - with a mission dedicated to serving the Detroit area's urban population.

Wayne State University is located in the heart of Detroit's cultural center, which features several museums, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Museum of African American History.  Detroit draws top entertainment in all areas of the performing arts from all over the world. The city also boasts four professional sports teams.  In addition, outdoor enthusiasts enjoy many recreational activities in the greater Detroit area and nearby Ontario, the Great Lakes and northern Michigan.

Financial Assistance

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics offers graduate research assistantships, which provide tuition, an annual stipend and health insurance.  No separate application is needed for financial aid.

Interdisciplinary Research

The Center's deep commitment to learning and investigation creates an ideal academic environment for the training of dozens of graduate, postgraduate and medical students each year.  The Center's interdisciplinary approach offers students a wide range of educational opportunities, both in basic and clinically oriented research laboratories.

Some of the Center's areas of active research include transcriptional and translational control; cell cycle regulation; chromosome dynamics and transmission; development and differentiation; molecular genetics and cytogenetics; molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis; signal transduction; cancer and metastasis; viral disease, molecular mechanisms of diabetes, collagen diseases and arthritis; neurological and neuromuscular diseases; gene therapy; mitochondrial and cardiovascular diseases; and human reproductive biology.

A more complete description of individual faculty research interests can be found at the Center's web site at http://www.genetics.wayne.edu.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Graduate students gain valuable hands-on experience in the Center's advanced laboratory facilities in the Gordon H. Scott Hall of Basic Medical Sciences, Biological Sciences Building, Louis M. Elliman Clinical Research Building and throughout the Wayne State campus.  Fully computerized libraries conveniently located next to Center laboratories maintain substantial collections with more than 3,000 journals, periodicals and electronic journals.

World-Renowned Faculty

Graduate students at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics have the opportunity to work with members of an internationally recognized team of more than 75 faculty members who are leaders in their field and deeply committed to excellence.  Most of the Center's researchers and clinical investigators are also affiliated with other Wayne State University departments, centers or institutes.  Their special focus on interdisciplinary research is breaking new ground through strong collaborations across the University campus, and around the world.

Admissions

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics grants admission to students who have a superior record of achievement in their previous studies and show a strong potential for success at the advanced level.  Applicants usually hold a bachelor's degree or master's degree with a high grade point average and a strong background in basic science.  Successful applicants have strong Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.  A strong performance on a GRE subject test is recommended but not required.  International students must show proficiency in English with a minimum TOEFL score of 600.

For more information or to obtain an application, please contact the Center's Graduate Officer. To apply, please submit your application and personal statement of your goals and objectives for obtaining a Ph.D. to the Center's Graduate Officer.  In addition, three letters of recommendation, original transcripts and TOEFL and GRE scores should be forwarded to the Graduate Officer.
