Reading E-mail at Some Other Account

If you wish to read messages sent to your genetics address at some other email account, such as med.wayne.edu, Hotmail, or Yahoo, you may do so. However, be sure to set up automatic forwarding so that messages sent to your genetics address will be sent on to your other account.

Here are 2 ways to do that:

1) Telnet to genetics.wayne.edu and login with your userid and password. Then use the pico text editor to create a new text file with the name .forward (note the period or dot at the beginning). Type your other address, i.e. the one to which you wish your messages to be forwarded, on one line, then save the file. For example, the file might have one line similar to this:

userid@med.wayne.edu

or

myname@yahoo.com

From then on, your messages will be forwarded automatically to the other address (they will not even stop in your genetics mailbox). If you wish to stop or change forwarding in the future, either delete or edit your .forward file as needed.

2) Hotmail, Yahoo, etc., allow you to pick up messages from other email servers, usually up to 4 other POPmail accounts, so that you can read all your messages at one place. This is done on your Hotmail or Yahoo setup screen. If you do this, you can set your Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. to either leave the mail on the server (e.g. leave copies on genetics) or not. If you set it to leave the mail on the server, you can read messages at both places. If you set it to not leave the mail on the server, the messages are removed from the genetics server and can be read only from Hotmail, etc.

Please be aware that Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. may have restrictions on how much mail you can store, and on the size and number of attachments that you can receive.
